7 Healthier Meat Eating Tips

  1. Shop for healthier red meat. Make sure any red meat you eat is lean. This means that there should not be any visible fat.
  2. Eat less red met. How much red meat you eat makes a difference. Keep your portion sizes small–fits in the palm of your hand, about the size of a deck of cards–and don’t eat it more than once a week.
  3. Buy lean cuts of red meat. When shopping for lean red meat, choose round steaks, roasts (eye round, top round, bottom round, round tip), top loin, top sirloin, chuck shoulder or arm roasts.
  4. Search for lean pork. When choosing lean pork, look for pork loin, tenderloin, center loin, and ham–but avoid bacon like it’s a poisonous pig.
  5. Choose extra-lean ground beef. For those hamburger loving days, choose 90 percent lean–and if you can–look for ground beef that is 93 or 95 percent lean.
  6. Eat leaner lunch meats. Eat lunch meats sparingly due to sodium, but if you must be part of the lunch meat crowd, buy lean roast beef, ham or low-fat luncheon meats instead of fatty bologna and salami.
  7. Avoid heavily marbled meat. When meat is streaked with that tell-tale white fat, keep it out of your grocery bag and far far away from your mouth.  Instead, choose cuts of meat devoid of those fatty designs that mean–FAT!

1. Sweet potatoes are king on the Round nutrition scale.  These spuds are high in fiber, vitamins A, C and B6, potassium, manganese and cancer-fighting antioxidants. Their anti-inflammatory properties help improve asthma, allergies and arthritis, plus they are filling with a heart-warming flavor. Sweet potatoes can be used in just about every recipe that calls for regular potatoes. For a healthy and hearty treat, mash sweet potatoes, add warm low-fat milk, a light sprinkling of nutmeg and 2 teaspoons vanilla.

2. Oranges are Round and belong to the healthy citrus fruit family. They can boast many healing properties, such as preventing diseases and protecting our body. Shopping for Round foods is as easy as finding balls among boxes or circles among squares. Round shopping is a visually-cued task that is so simple a kindergartner could successfully fill a cart with nutritious diet foods.

Round Diet shopping means always walking a Round path along the edges of the grocery store, where most supermarkets display the healthiest food in a circular shape. Other than spices, legumes, beans, and whole grains, the center isles are lined with boxes, bags and cans of preservative-filled, processed foods that might not even be real food.

Reading food labels will be reduced to the likes of “Golden Delicious” on an apple or “Chiquita” on a banana. You will be free from deciphering unpronounceable chemicals, preservatives and other multi-syllable ingredients. Any confusion over what is diet or non-diet food will be as clear as black and white.

On weekends, you are likely to find yourself casually strolling through your local Farmer’s Market chatting with farmers as you buy fresh and flavorful foods with an environmentally green, low carbon footprint.

Example Food on the Round Diet

Here’s an example of 3 days of meals and snacks on the Round Diet. Keep in mind that along with these meals, I also added Extra Round foods for cooking and flavor.

For instance, I cooked the eggs in a drizzle of olive oil, and sprinkled the salads with a light dressing I made out of rice wine vinegar, olive oil, basil and Dijon mustard.

I also drank water during and inbetween meals, which means you might want to make sure you are within reach of a place to pee.
